Abstract
1,253,169. Assembling electrical brushes; jointing by stamping; shearing. AMP Inc. 16 June, 1970 [24 June, 1969], No. 29060/70. Headings B3A, B3Q and B3W. A method of assembling a lead wire 2 of an electrical component through a spring 6 comprises, positioning the wire at one end of the spring and across the axis of the spring to form a bight in the wire, compressing the spring, locating a part of the wire emerging from the other end of the spring in a ferrule 332 of a terminal and securing the terminal to the wire, the bight being moved through the spring. The lead 2 is positioned manually in an eye 300 of a threading rod 298 after the spring 6 has been placed thereon, and a brush 4 for a dynamoelectric machine is disposed in a holder 384. The rod 298 is pulled through the spring and simultaneously the holder 384 is raised to the level of a spring holder 306 and brought into abutment with it, thereby compressing the spring. The wire 2 is pulled through a retainer plate 312, taking up an arcuate form as it moves through the eye 300 so that it is lightly retained by the plate. The operator then places the bared end of an insulated wire 324 above the ferrule 332. The ferrule is located on an anvil 316 and a carrier strip 328 of a strip (326) of terminals, Fig. 1 (not shown), is located in a slot 318 of a depressible shear block 320. A crimping die 322 is then actuated and on its downward movement the ferrule 332 is crimped to the wires 2, 324. At the same time, the shear block 320 is depressed, as the lower end of the die 322 engages a projection 512 on the shear block so that the terminal on the anvil 316 is sheared from the strip 328. After the die has moved through its return stroke, the brush 4 is ejected from the apparatus by a pivoted plate (494), which projects into the path of the holder 384 during its return stroke, Fig. 19 (not shown).
