Abstract
An improvement in the process of Specification 1,027,331 for producing unsaturated hydrocarbons of low molecular weight from coal resides in heating the coal particles to a temperature of 1300-2000 DEG C. in the closed zone for a total residence time of less than 125 milliseconds. Higher yields of acetylene, e.g. up to 28% based on the weight of coal, are thus obtained, in addition to CO, H2 and CH4. Preferably the residence time of the coal particles in the zone, including the time of heating to the reaction temperature, is up to 100 milliseconds and that of the gaseous products 0.01-25 milliseconds, the hydrocarbons then being cooled to below 300 DEG C. within 0.01-25 milliseconds. The particles are preferably carried by a stream of preheated hydrogen. The zone pressure may be 2 mm. Hg-15 atmospheres. The coal may be of 20-350 B.S.S. size, or "micronized," i.e. less than 30 microns, and of Rank 300-900; if desired, cannel or brown coals or lignites can be used.
