Abstract
1,051,772. Allene and methyl acetylene. NATIONAL LEAD CO. Feb. 11, 1964 [March 6, 1963], No.5626/64. Heading C5E. Allene and methyl acetylene are produced by subjecting an olefin feed comprising propylene, isobutylene or an admixture thereof to a temperature above 700‹ C. for a time of 0À0005- 0À06 seconds in the presence of hydrogen bromide, cooling the resulting products to below 500‹ C. to terminate reaction, and separating the desired constituents. Hydrogen bromide is added as liquid or vapour or produced in situ from an organic, or water-soluble inorganic, bromide, such as ethyl bromide, 2-bromopropane or 1-bromobutane. The feed of pure propylene or isobutylene or a petroleum fraction, for example, may be preheated to 800- 1250‹ C. or 700-1150‹ C. in the case of propylene, isobutylene, respectively, for example by admixture with superheated steam at 1000-2000‹ C., the steam serving as inert diluent. providing a total preferred pressure of 1 atm., inhibiting coke formation, and supplying heat for endothermic reaction. Preferred molar ratios of steam to isobutylene or propylene are 10: 1 to 4: 1, and of isobutylene or propylene to hydrogen bromide, 1:1 to 15: 1. Alternatively, heating of the feed is effected by partial combustion thereof, by passage through an electric arc, or by the addition of hot inert material. Rapid cooling to 500‹ C. is effected with water, oil, coal gas or an inert powder. Hydrogen bromide is recovered and recycled. The products are separable by known methods, e.g. as disclosed in U.S.A. Specification 2,763,703.
