Abstract

1,073,393. Electromagnets. M. HARTING, [trading as WILHELM HARTING WERK FœR ELEKTROTECHNIK UND MECHANIK]. March 2, 1965 [March 5, 1964], No. 8757/65. Heading H1P. An electromagnet, in which the armature can assume two or more stable positions, comprises a plurality of coils 27 ... 30 arranged end to end and an operating shaft 33 coaxial with the coils and carrying at least two thin armatures 40, 41, a further armature 44 being arranged to slide on the shaft 33 over at least part of the distance between the thin armatures 40, 41. The coils 27 ... 30 are disposed within a soft iron housing 20 having end poles 22, 23. When switch 50 is momentarily closed, coil 27 is energized, deflecting a main armature 44 to the left which impacts against the thin armature 40 and deflects the shaft 33 to the left. The armatures 40, 44 are retained in their left hand positon by means of an annular permanent magnet 31. The shaft 33 may be set to the central position shown by momentarily closing switches 51 or 52 so that armatures 44 or 45 will be deflected towards the central position, impacting against an abutment 37, fixed to shaft 33, and setting the shaft to the position shown. Similarly, switch 53 may be momentarily closed to deflect the shaft 33 to the right. The end positions may be adjusted by screwing the end poles 22, 23 into or out of the housing 20. Magnets 31, 32 may be omitted, the armatures then being held in their stable positions by means of a reduced current in the appropriate windings. Figs. 1a, 1b (not shown) relate to a bi-stable electromagnet.
