Abstract
1,071,799. Automatic control system. ELEKTROKEMISK A.S. Oct. 20, 1964 [Oct. 24, 1963], No. 42749/64. Heading G3R. An arrangement for controlling the position of the ends of electrodes in a resistive medium such as the charge in an electric reduction furnace wherein the electrodes are submerged for electro-thermally heating the medium by the passage of current, comprises varying the depth of electrode immersion to produce an electrical signal dH representative of the variation, producing a signal dR representative of the corresponding variation of resistance or of another electrical parameter of the material such as indicated by a current or power measurement, or capacitance between the electrode and the melt, and developing a signal dR/dH. A factor representative of total resistance is introduced in a circuit 11 to control a servomotor in accordance with the function dR/dH or R dR/dH. The arrangement may be continuous or discontinuous, and the position of the electrodes may be indicated. The product may be obtained in a wattmeter and separate motors for initiating displacement of the electrodes and for controlling them may be provided.
