Abstract
Materials such as paper or board have an asbestos-fibre base with silica distributed throughout the mass. The superficial portions of the silica are amorphous and afford mechanical strength and imperviousness to water, and the remainder of the silica comprises hydrated silica with or without sodium silicate and forms a bond between the amorphous silica and each fibre and also among the fibres. They may be made by impregnating an asbestos paper or board with a solution of sodium silicate in water, drying it, immersing it in a solution of ammonium chloride, and heating. In an alternative method, asbestos fibre is slurried in a aqueous solution of sodium silicate, the slurry is formed to a desired shape, dried, and then treated with ammonium chloride and heated, as above. The sheet may be corrugated before or after the treatment, and may be further waterproofed by immersion in a solution of bitumen in petroleum spirit.
