Abstract
Oxygen-containing organic compounds which contain 1 to 9 carbon atoms per molecule and are alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters or carboxylic acids are separated from mixtures thereof with hydrocarbons with which they form azeotropes by contacting said mixtures in the liquid phase with a polyhydric alcohol or alkylene carbonate (first solvent) having a boiling-point which is higher than those of the oxygen-containing organic compounds in the mixture, thereby extracting said oxygen-containing compounds in said first solvent, then contacting the extract with a paraffinic hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon mixture (second solvent) having a boiling point in the range 260 DEG to 320 DEG C. to remove hydrocarbons from the extract, and subsequently recovering the oxygen-containing compounds from the extract by distillation. The hydrocarbons which were present in the initial mixture may be recovered by distillation from the second solvent. The process of the invention may be effected in a column into which the heavier of the two solvents is fed into the upper part, the lighter of the two solvents into the lower part and the mixture at an intermediate point.
