Abstract

Textile material is rendered resistant to fire and soiling by treatment with an aqueous solution comprising a condensed phosphoric acid and a nitrogen base and in which the ratio of P to N is 1 to 0.5-2, optionally drying the material, and baking at 110-170 DEG C for 30 sec. to 30 min. The phosphoric acid has a degree of condensation of 3-30. The base is ammonia; mono, di, or tri methyl-, ethyl-, n-propyl-methanol-, ethanol-, or n-propanolamine; or tetramethyl, tetraethyl, or tetra-n-propyl ammonium hydroxide. The solution may also contain dimethylol urea or ethylene urea. The fabric is of cotton, hemp, rayon, acetate rayon, silk, wool, or polyamide, and may contain up to 50% of nylon, or polyester or acrylic resin. The material is impregnated with 0.3-30% of acid plus base.
