Abstract

1,069,333. Freeze-drying. NIRO ATOMIZER A.S. Aug. 3, 1965 [Aug. 6, 1964; July 29, 1965], No. 33097/65. Heading F4G. Apparatus for freeze-drying pulverulent material comprises a vacuum container 1 connected to a source of vacuum and condenser (not shown) and housing a filter 5 shaped as a cylinder into and from which the material is introduced and discharged via valved conduits 6, 8 respectively, and in which is mounted a rotary shaft 2 with ribs 3 for the passage of a heating medium. The heating shaft is rotated by a motor 4 which may also rotate the filter container 5 about its axis so that both the filter and heating shaft 2 agitate the material. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the filter is rotated but the hollow shaft 2 is used only for charging and discharging material and separate heating members are mounted outside the filter container. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown) the filter comprises a number of tubular members inserted from the end of the vacuum container and defining a space for the material between the wall of the container and the filters. Heating members are attached to the outer walls of each filter member and a hollow shaft with blades is mounted centrally of the container for agitating, feeding and discharging the material.
