Abstract
Elements of or coated with titanium or a titanium-base alloy are pickled with a mixture of hydrochloric and nitric acids, washed, dried, coated with a metal of the platinum group and, after washing and drying if necessary, are finally heated in air to a temperature between 150 and 300 DEG C. Typically a graphite rod sheathed in Ti is degreased in trichloroethylene, pickled in a boiling 2:1 by volume mixture of 35%, HC1 and conc. HNO3, washed and dried, electroplated with Pt to give a coating of 20mg/dm2, washed and dried at 110 DEG C. and finally annealed for 2 hours at 250 DEG C. in air. The electroplating bath is of the chloroplatinic acid type containing also diammonium and disodium orthophosphates, boric acid, sodium hydroxide, and hydrofluoric and orthophosphoric acids and ammonia and is of pH 4.5. Reference is also made to depositing the platinum group metal by vacuum metallizing or chemical plating and to repeating the steps of depositing the metal and annealing one or more times using electrolysis or these processes in any combination. Platinized titanium coated graphite electrodes prepared as described above with a copper connection made into the graphite may be used as anodes in electrolytic production of sodium chlorate and platinized perforated titanium anodes similarly prepared may be used in winning cobalt from a cobalt chloride solution.
