Abstract

1,068,755. Stapling and nailing machines. SIGNODE CORPORATION. Aug. 4, 1965 [Aug. 24, 1964; Sept. 8, 1964], No. 33390/65. Heading B4C. A fastener driving tool for driving nails and staples into a workpiece comprises a driving piston 8 movable in a cylinder 51 which is connected, via a chamber 21 defined by a removable cap 19, with a compressed air reservoir 4, the flow of air to and from the cylinder being controlled by a pilot, main and exhaust valves 33, 14 and 45 respectively. The main valve 14 is formed with a head 15 adapted to normally close a port 16 leading from the reservoir into the chamber 21 and with a piston member 25 slidable in a chamber 28; the interior of the chamber communicates with the reservoir 4 via a port 30 and passage 36 in the main valve. The pilot valve is in the form of a ball 37 normally urged by a spring 36 on to a seat 38. In operation, compressed air acts on the piston 25 via port 30 and passage 36 to maintain main valve closed. Upon actuation of a trigger 34 the ball is lifted off its seat, so as to vent the chamber 28 thereby allowing the main valve to open so that compressed air passes into the cylinder via chamber 21 to drive the piston 8 on its working stroke; in the open position of the main valve the exhaust valve 45 closes an exhaust port 49. When the trigger is released, the ball valve re-seats so that pressure builds up in the chamber 28 thereby closing the main valve and opening the exhaust valve as shown. Pressurized air then passes via a port 52 to act on the underside of the working piston so as to return it to the raised position.
