Abstract
The waste liquor from the acidic pickling of ferrous metals is treated by passing it through an agitated bed of limestone particles of such a size that 95-100% are retained on a No. 18 B.S. sieve, at such a rate that some finely divided limestone passes, with the liquor, to a second stage wherein the liquor is aerated until the pH of the clear liquor above the suspension of hydrated Fe2O3 is at least 6. The particle size of the limestone may also be such that 100% pass a B.S. plate of 3 inches square aperture. Limestone or CaCO3 may be added to the second stage. Agitation may be by means of a mechanical stirrer or by containing the limestone in a revolving drum. The hydrated Fe2O3 may be removed by filtering. The described embodiment is with sulphuric pickling liquors, but those with HF, HNO3, HCl and mixtures thereof are also disclosed.
