Abstract
1,066,485. Screwing. D. E. FITTON, and R. A. FITTON. July 3, 1964 [Aug. 16, 1963]. No. 32393/63. Heading B3N. A screw thread is produced in a workpiece by a tap or die which is moved up to the workpiece, and is thereafter advanced, due to its screwed engagement with the work, against resilient means. A tool holder shank (15) is locked in a lathe turret (12), and a slidable member (17) carrying a tap (13) is slidable in the holder sleeve (14), and is keyed thereto at (18). The member is urged inwardly by a tension spring (22) and this movement is resisted by a compression spring (25). There may be two or more springs (25), or a single spring surrounding spring (22) may be provided. Two electric timers are provided for producing a predetermined length of screw thread, and a third timer may be provided for reversing the in-feed, so as to break up the chips. In a modification, a die holder (17), Fig. 3 (not shown), has a peg (30) which passes through body (14) and engages an adjustable stop (31) to limit the in-feed.
