Abstract

[Also in Divisions F4 and G1] An electric thermal-storage space heater comprises a refractory parallelepipedic block with electric elements (7) extending between one pair of opposite faces, and air passages (8) extending between another pair, the element being in sockets opening at each end to the exterior of the heater, and air being passed through the passages by a fan. A heat insulation comprises lower and upper walls (11. 12), side walls (15, 16) in contact with the block, and side walls (13, 14) spaced from the block to form chambers (9, 10). Air from fan (24) (Fig. 2, not shown) passes from duct (26) and chamber (9) through passages (8) and from chamber (10) and duct (28) and is then mixed with cold air from by-pass duct (29). A bimetallic spiral (31) in duct (28) controls flap (30) in duct (28) which itself controls the proportion of air passing through the block and maintains the output air temperature constant. Another flap (32) in duct (26) opens only when the fan operates. When the fan stops the flaps (30, 32) isolate the block to reduce convection currents. The block is formed from stacked parallelepipedic bricks preferably of electrically insulating refractory material and the elements (7) and passages (8) are normal to the block faces. In Fig. 9 (not shown) air is in a closed circuit and heats water passing through tubes of a heat exchanger and supplying radiators. A screen (42) in front of the tubes is closed opposite the air heater outlet and elsewhere has openings. In an alternative embodiment air inlets and outlets are provided in one face of the block only.
