Abstract
Cylic alkanols are prepared by oxiding cycloparaffins with air in the presence of a boric acid compound to convert at the most, 20 weight per cent to oxidation products including borate esters, vacuum flashing to remove the unoxidized hydrocarbons and ketones, and hydrolysing the residual borate esters to the cyclic alkanols. The overheads from the vacuum flash are condensed, hydrogenated to reduce the ketones to cyclic alkanols and recycled to the air oxidation step, in a ratio of from about 10 to 25 parts per part of fresh feed. The cyclo-paraffin feed may be obtained by catalytic hydrogenation of cyclic dimers and trimers of conjugated di-olefines, and an example describes the preparation of cyclodecanol from cyclododecane prepared in turn by hydrogenating cyclododecatriene in the presence of a nickel catalyst. The cyclic alcohols may be further oxidized with nitric acid to the dibasic acids. Apparatus comprising a hydrogenation reactor, followed by an air oxidation reactor, a condenser, a borate ester flash drum and a reactor in which the borate ester products are hydrolysed is described and illustrated.
