Abstract

Oxygen-containing compounds comprising an aldehyde containing not more than 4 carbon atoms in the molecule and a carboxylic acid are recovered from an aqueous solution by distilling the solution at substantially atmospheric pressure to separate a fraction up to an overhead temperature in the range 90-97 DEG C., adding to the residue of the aqueous solution a C1-C4 aliphati alcohol in an amount in excess of that required to form acetate and esters, and subjecting the mixture so obtained to distillation. The process may be used, for example, in the treatment of the mixture obtained by the catalytic oxidation of propylene, butylene or of a higher hydrocarbon or the mixture obtained by the catalytic oxidation of acrolein or methacrolein. Examples are given of (a) the treatment with methanol of the mixture obtained by the catalytic oxidation of propylene after the separation of the acrolein fraction to give a mixture which on distillation yields formaldehyde dimethylacetal, methyl acetate and methyl acrylate; and (b) the treatment with methanol of the mixture obtained by the catalytic oxidation of acrolein, after removal of the acrolein fraction, to give on distillation methyl acetate, methyl acrylate and methylol.
