Abstract

Novel compounds of the general Formula I <FORM:1060466/C2/1> (wherein each of R1 and R2 represents a C1- 4 alkyl or C2- 4 alkenyl radical and R3 represents a C1- 4 alkyl radical), and their acid addition salts, are prepared by splitting off the elements of water from a compound of the general Formula IV <FORM:1060466/C2/2> by the action of a concentrated mineral acid, a strong organic acid, SOCl2, POCl3, ZnCl2 or acetic anhydride, or a mixture thereof (especially a mixture of acetic anhydride and concentrated HCl), and, if desired, converting the product into a salt with an inorganic or organic acid. Substituted 9 - hydroxydihydroanthracenes (IV) are prepared by a Grignard reaction from 10-R1-10-R2-anthrones-(9). Pharmaceutical compositions having antihistaminic, cough inhibiting, bronchodilatory, serotonin inhibiting, anticholinergic and/or sedative properties, for enteral or parenteral administration, comprise a compound of general Formula I, or a physiologically acceptable acid addition salt thereof, and a physiologically acceptable carrier.
