Abstract
Shampoo compositions comprise: (A) 4-16 wt. per cent of an ampholytic surfactant of formula <FORM:1057418/C4-C5/1> where W is R2OH, R2OM or R2OR2COOM, Y is OH-, R2SO3- or R3OSO3-, R is a C4-18 hydrocarbon radical, R2 is a C1-4 aliphatic hydrocarbon group, or a C2-4 aliphatic ether or keto group, any of which may contain a hydroxy substituent, R3 is a C6-18 aliphatic hydrocarbon group, an aliphatic - aromatic hydrocarbon group the aliphatic portion of which has at least 6 carbon atoms, or a fatty acid glyceride group, M is an alkali metal; and (B) 4-16 wt. per cent of a fatty acid amide of a protein hydrolysate represented by the general formula R1CONH(polypeptide)COOX where R1 contains 8-18 carbon atoms and X is a cation, e.g. Na, K or an ethanolamine. Typical of the specified additives (A) and (B) are (A) the disodium salt of 2-lauryl-cycloimidium - 1 - ethoxy - ethionic acid - 1 - hydroxy-1-ethionic acid; and (B) the triethanolamine salt of the cocoamide of protein hydrolysates obtained from leather. The compositions may also contain up to 8 wt. per cent of an amide, e.g. fatty acid mono- or di-ethanolamides and ethoxylated amides. The base of the compositions is water, optionally containing a small amount of an alcohol, e.g. ethanol. The following optional additives are also mentioned: formalin, polyglycol mono-stearates, ethylene glycol distearate, hexylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerine, conventional soaps, e.g. potassium laurate or oleate, ethoxylated lanolin, liquid lanolin fractions, and citric acid. The exemplified shampoos are liquids.
