Abstract
1, 056, 483. Detecting flaws electrically. REPUBLIC STEEL CORPORATION. April 9, 1964 [April 9, 1963], No.30842/66. Divided out of 1,056,482. Heading G1N. [Also in Division H3] Defects in a moving workpiece, such as a wire 18, Fig. 1 (not shown), are detected by a detector 12, and marked by a rotating carbide cutter 21, the detector being connected to a control circuit 13, which generates a series of pulses for intermittently operating the cutter over the duration of a defect. The detector 12 generates a magnetic field, and variations in this field which arise from defects in the wire cause an A. C. signal to pass to the control circuit 13. The control circuit Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) provides an adjustable mark to space ratio for the defect markings, and ensures that this ratio is unaffected by the disappearance of one fault and the rapid appearance of a second fault within a period of one mark or one space. The motor driving the cutter 22, Fig. 2 (not shown), is pivoted, 24, and biased to a retracted position by a spring 25, and the cutter is forced on to the workpiece by a pneumatic valve 14, which tilts the motor in response to each pulse from the control circuit.
