Abstract

1,056,482. Detecting flaws electrically. REPUBLIC STEEL CORPORATION. April 9, 1964 [April 9, 1963], No.14758/64. Heading G1N. [Also in Division H3] Defects, such as seams, in a moving metal bar 15, Fig. 1 (not shown), are detected by a detector 12, the output signals of which are fed in cyclic succession to different channels 215, 216, 217, 218, Fig. 3 (not shown), in a control circuit 13, each channel containing a pulsedelaying circuit 221, &c. and operating a common defect marker in the form of a carbide cutter 21 when a defect has travelled from the detector to the marker. The bar rotates relatively to the detector, which thus describes a helical path along the bar, and the spacing between the detector and the marker is such that when a detected defect has moved through a complete revolution, it is exactly adjacent the marker when the delayed pulse operates the marker. Any further defects detected during this revolution are similarly marked when the marker is operated by corresponding pulses stored in other channels. A dekatron 207, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), is used to select the channels, and the output pulses drive a single monostable multivibrator 235. An eddy current type detector is used, and the carbide cutter 21 which is driven by a motor 22, Fig. 2 (not shown), is biased pneumatically into the marking position against a spring 25, which holds it in a normally retracted position. The multivibrator 235, operates a relay 237, which operates a solenoid air valve 14, controlling the marker.
