Abstract

Novel compounds of formula <FORM:1055786/C2/1> where R stands for hydrogen, or for an alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, or aralkyl radical, or for an aryl radical which may be substituted by one or more halogen atoms or alkoxy radicals, X stands for an aryl radical which is substituted by one or more halogen atoms, or alkoxy, alkyl, halo - alkyl, alkoxycarbonyl, nitro, cyano, methyl-sulphonyl, or phenyl radicals, and ring A may optionally be further substituted by one or more halogen atoms, or alkoxy, alkyl, alkoxycarbonyl, nitro, carboxy, or aminosulphonyl radicals, and the pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, but excluding the known compounds N1 - 2 - carboxyphenyl - N2 - 3 - chlorophenylurea, N1 - 2 - ethoxycarbonylphenyl-N2-4 - iodophenylurea, N1 - 3 - nitrophenyl - N2 - 2 - carboxyphenylurea, N1 - 2 - ethoxycarbonylphenyl - N2 - 4 - methyl - 3 - nitrophenylurea, N1 - 2 - methoxycarbonylphenyl - N2 - 2,4,6 - triiodophenylurea, N1 - 2 - methoxycarbonylphenyl - N2 - 4 - methylphenylurea, and N1-2-ethoxycarbonylphenyl - N2 - 3 - iodophenylurea, are prepared (1) when R has the meaning stated above, by reacting a compound of formula X.NCO with the appropriate o-aminobenzoic acid derivative, or a salt thereof, (2) when R is an alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl or aralkyl radical, or for an aryl radical which may be substituted by one or more halogen atoms or alkoxy radicals, by reacting a compound of formula X.NH2 with an appropriate o-isocyanate-benzoic acid ester, (3) when R has the meaning stated under (1) above, by reacting an o-aminobenzoic acid derivative with an aryl carbamate of formula Aryl.O.CO.NHX, (4) when R is hydrogen, by hydrolysis of a 3-arylquinazolin-2,4-dione, (5) when R is hydrogen, by hydrogenolysis of the corresponding urea derivatives wherein R stands for a benzyl or benzhydryl radical, and (6) when X stands for an aryl radical substituted by a halogen atom in the ortho and/or para positions to the nitrogen atom, by treating the corresponding unsubstituted derivative with a halogenating agent. Substituted phenyl isocyanates may be prepared by treating appropriately substituted anilines with phosgene. Aryl esters of anthranilic acid may be prepared by treating isatoic anhydride with a phenol.
