Abstract
A formaldehyde polymer of molecular weight at least 10,000 is etherified with an alkylene oxide so as to improve its stability to heat. The polymer may be treated in the powder state, e.g. of grain size of 50 to 500 microns by agitation by the fluidized bed technique or in suspension, or in solution or in a molten state. The treatment may take place at 20 DEG to 200 DEG C., in an inert atmosphere, e.g. nitrogen, under superatmospheric pressure and in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. a Lewis acid or other acid catalyst or aluminium chloride or other metal salt catalyst. The alkylene oxide may be a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic epoxide, an aromatic epoxide or an epoxide substituted by an inert group and may be used in the liquid or gaseous state and in excess.
