Abstract
1,054,269. Polyester graft polymers. JAPANESE ASSOCIATION FOR RADIATION RESEARCH ON POLYMERS. June 25, 1963 [June 29, 1962], No. 25263/63. Heading C3G. Fibre-forming polyesters in the form of films, fibres or powders are grafted with polymerizable vinylidene monomers in the presence of swelling agents for the polyesters, the swelling agents being one or more of saturated organic acids and anhydrides, salts and esters thereof, saturated alcohols, saturated organic halogen compounds, dimethylformamide, dimethylsulphoxide, formalin; acetonitrile, benzonitrile, adiponitrile, cyclohexylamine, xylene, acetophenone, acetone, methylethyl ketone, acetaldehyde and inorganic acids and salts. The preferred polyester is polyethylene terephthalate. Grafting may be effected by means of irradiation of the polyester, e.g. by gamma rays or electrons, either before or during contact with the monomer and in the presence or absence of air, by the use of peroxide or azo initiators, by the preoxidation of the polyester or by the use of light. The monomers may be used in the liquid or gaseous phase. Preferred monomers are acrylic and methacrylic acids and their salts and esters, acrylonitrile, acrylamide, styrene, vinyl formate and acetate vinyl and vinylidene chlorides, alkyl and substituted alkyl vinyl ethers and ketones, vinylpyrrolidone and ethylene. Polyesters grafted with polyacrylic acid show increased dye affinity Examples describe grafting fibres of polyethylene terephthalate with styrene, vinyl acetate, 2-methyl-5- vinylpyridine, acrylic acid and acrylonitrile using as swelling agents formic, acetic, propionic, oxalic caprylic and trifluoroacetic acids, IN hydrochloric acid, methanol, ethanol, phenol, benzyl alcohol, benzonitrile, cyclohexylamine, dichlorobenzene, benzyl chloride, propylene glycol, chloroform, acetic anhydride, formalin, m-xylene, acetone, methylethyl ketone and adiponitrile
