1454779 Graft polymerization process UNISEARCH Ltd 20 Dec 1973 [22 Dec 1972] 59124/73 Heading C3G A graft polymer is produced by subjecting a polyacrylate, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, a polyamide, a polyolefin, a fluorocarbon polymer or a polystyrene to irradiation from ionizing radiation in the presence of styrene, a substituted styrene, acrylic acid, an ester of acrylic acid or of acrylic acid when substituted with a halogen atom or a C 1 to C 6 -alkyl group, wherein the alcohol derived component of the ester contains up to 8 carbon atoms, vinyl pyridine, acrylonitrile, vinyl acetate, isopropenyl acetate, or a mixture thereof, the monomer being dissolved or dispersed in a solvent system which consists, at least in a major proportion, of a polar solvent and in the presence of a concentration of, less than 2M. of a mineral acid, formic acid, acetic acid or a substituted acetic acid, the dose of ionizing radiation being less than 5Mrad and the dose rate being less than 1Mrad/minute. Examples are given in which the polymer is selected from polypropylene powder or film, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride film, or nylon film; the monomer is styrene and/or methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, isopropenyl acetate, vinyl acetate, a mixture of styrene and acrylonitrile, acrylonitrile, ethyl acrylate or a mixture of styrene and ethyl acrylate; the ionizing radiation is from a Co<SP>60</SP> source of u.v. light; the solvent is methanol, ethanol, dimethyl formamide, dimethyl sulphoxide, dioxane or acetone and the acid is sulphuric acid, nitric acid, perchloric acid or hydrochloric acid.
