Two series of slivers are passed through independent drawing heads, united and passed vertically through a further drawing head. The arrangement illustrated in Fig. 1 may be modified by having the initial drawing heads inclined and the drawing belts 12 may be passed over a third roller permitting adjustment of tension, Fig. 8 (not shown). As the slivers are drawn from cans they may be passed through a pair of rollers and over a parabolic diverter, Fig. 7 (not shown), which allows the direction of movement to be changed without superposition of the slivers. Alongside the pair of rollers a photo-cell is mounted that is associated with mechanism to stop the machine on sliver breakage. Further stop motions are provided; one for the prevention of tangles and wrapping-up of fibres is coupled with a roller weighting arrangement, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown) and consists of a spring-loaded pusher urged against a roller journal in a manner to close an electric circuit on excess movement of the journal, and the other includes a condensing funnel, Figs. 11 and 13 (not shown) that is moved when thickenings are present in the sliver to close an electric circuit. A twopart guide funnel is associated with the condensing funnel and magnetically mounted for ease of removal, Fig. 11 (not shown). The support for the condensing funnel may carry stationary bearers for rollers, Fig. 12 and 14 (not shown).
