Abstract

1,050,336. Valves. CONSOLIDATED ELECTRODYNAMICS CORPORATION. Sept. 25, 1963 [Nov. 19, 1962], No. 37659/63. Heading F2V. A method of finishing the unlapped seating ring 7 and wedging device 8 of a ball valve consists of cycling the actuating mechanism, the loose ball closure 6 being of a ceramic, e.g. aluminium oxide, and having a hardness greater than that of the ring 7 and device 8; the ring 7 may be a cobalt-based alloy. When the surfaces 4 of the ball cage 5 are lifted by the stem 9 they engage the ball and roll it from the ring 7 to open the valve. Upon lowering the stem 9, the cage 5 descends replacing the ball on the ring 7; further lowering of the stem 9 causes the wedging device 8, also attached to the stem 9, to engage the ball 6 and urge it firmly against the ring 7.
