Abstract
1,049,779. Testing pneumatic tyres. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Sept. 19, 1963 [Oct. 16, 1962], No. 39035/62. Heading B7C. A device for testing for looseness of the plies of a pneumatic tyre by detecting bulging of the plies when compressed air is injected between the carcass plies comprises a pneumatic piston and cylinder assembly and a hollow needle 20 having an axial bore for the supply of compressed air to the interior thereof, the needle 20 and piston 12 being reciprocable with respect to the cylinder 7. The needle 20 is seated in the axial bore 18a of a housing 18 and the housing 18 is screw-threaded to engage the screw-threaded end of a piston-rod 14 attached to the piston 12. A passageway 27 in the piston rod 14 connects the inlet 26 of the needle 20 to the interior of the cylinder 7 and thus to the source of compressed air. The free open end 25 of the needle projects through a cap 23 which is screwed on to the free end of the housing and acts as an adjustable stop. The piston 12 and thus the needle 20 are urged towards the closed end 8 of the cylinder by means of a helical spring 16 so that in its fully retracted position the needle is protected by a cylindrical shroud 28. The device is mounted on a bracket 2 formed of two plates 3a, 3b, the plate 3b being provided with an aperture which slidably receives the piston rod 14. The plate 3a is arranged to fit closely against the interior of the bead and sidewall portions 5 of a tyre, an adjustable stop 6 on the plate 3b being provided for engagement with a bead base. The needle 20 is forced into the sidewall of a tyre by supplying compressed air to the cylinder 7. Compressed air is then transmitted to a point between the plies of the carcass to test for looseness of the plies.
