Abstract

1,049,537. Thermoelectric devices. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Oct. 10, 1963 [Oct. 15, 1962], No. 38885/62. Heading H1K. [Also in Division G1] Apparatus for analysing a material by heating a test sample and a reference sample of similar thermal conductivity and specific heat and noting their temperature differences comprises a cylinder made of two materials forming a thermocouple, with one cavity 3 (Fig. 2) in the middle, and a further cavity 6, 7 at each end in which are located the test sample and reference material respectively, whereby on heating temperature differences occur which characterize the test material, these temperature differences causing a resultant potential difference between the two thermo-electric semicylinders, whereby a circulating current is produced which reacts with the earth's magnetic field, or a locally produced magnetic field, to cause the cylinder to rotate about a wire suspension 11. The angle of twist is indicative of the temperature difference, and the ambient temperature is measured by a separate thermocouple (not shown).
