A strip-tensioning and joining device, e.g. for binding a packing case comprises a clamp for clamping together two parts of the binding strip, a displaceable die co-operating with a. fixed die for joining the two parts of the strip, a toggle linkage supporting the movable die and a wedge actuated by a pneumatically driven piston and co-operable with the linkage to effect a joining operation. As described, compressed-air passes through a valve in a handle 1 (Fig. 1, not shown), to a head-piece 5 containing a rotor adapted to rotate a gearwheel 13, which in turn rotates a gear-wheel 14 and a tension ring roller 17 which is mounted on the same shaft 15 as the gear-wheel 14. Shaft 15 is journalled in rocker 16 (Fig. 6, not shown), spring-loaded to press roller 17 towards a base plate 21. Mounted in the base plate 21 is a housing 22 carrying a movable die 44 cooperating with a fixed die 49 on plate 21 and attached via a punch 43 to a toggle linkage 41, pivotally mounted on the punch. The upper end of the toggle 41 carries a freely-rotatable roller 40 resting against roller 37 in the inoperative position. To the centre of the toggle is connected one end of a link 46 pivoted about pin 47 and a spring 48 keeping the toggle against roller 37. Above the housing 22 is a cylinder 28 containing a piston 32 and connected to the compressed-air source via a line 12, a valve in a housing 7 and a line 11. Secured to the piston is a wedge 34 adapted to pass between the rollers 37, 40. In operation, compressed-air is passed to the rotor after the strips have been placed between the two dies and between roller 17 and the base plate 21. The rotor causes roller 17 to tension the strip. The air pressure is released and the spring-loaded rocker causes the roller 17 to maintain the tension in the strip. Compressed-air is then passed to cylinder 28 to force the piston and wedge downwardly and cause the toggle to be moved leftwardly (Fig. 3) and the die 44 downwardly to stamp notches into the strip (Fig. 8, not shown). At the same time the end of the strip may be severed. A safety lever 57 (Fig. 7, not shown), may be used to keep the strip in position between the dies.
