Abstract

To permit a stepless variation in the size of the steps in which the transmission ratio of the belt-and-cone gearing of a roving frame is changed during a wind, the angular position relative to its own axis of a planet 9 Fig. 1 (not shown), inside a sun 12 can be adjusted at will; if it is desired also to vary the ratio during a wind, its angular position is additionally changed as the wind proceeds. The gear 9 is connected to a rocker-arm 7 through a pivoted link 8; as the arm 7 is rocked it inclines forward a control shaft through a one-way clutch 6 to rotate step-wise a worm 5 engaging a nut connected to the belt 3. The arm 7 is caused to rock by moving the axis of the planet 9 through a right angle with each stroke of the traverse, the planet being then rotated by engaging the internal teeth of the sun; to this end, a piston 14, which reverses with each stroke of the traverse in a cylinder 13 controlled by an electromagnetic valve-slide, actuates, through a rack and pinion, a shaft 11 carrying a rocker arm 10 fastened to the axis of the planet. By presetting the angular position of the planet about its axis, the angular stroke of the rocker 7 is changed according to the change in position of the point where the link 8 is attached to the planet. The axis on which the arm 10 rocks coincides with the rotational axes of the sun 12; the diameter of the planet is half that of the sun and the latter has twice the number of teeth than the planet, so that the point at which the link is attached to the planet, moves in a straight line as the planet moves. To set the position of the planet, the sun 12 is rotated by a gear 19 engaging its external teeth when a knob 22 is loosened; the extent of the rotation is indicated by a pointer 20 which co-operates with a scale on a disc 21. To vary the angular position of the planet 9 as the wind proceeds, the sun 12 is gradually inclined round by tightening the nut 22 so that disc 21 can drive the gear 19; the disc 21 is pivotally secured to an arm 23 with two rollers at its lower end, one, 24 of which is constrained by a guide 26 to travel in a vertical path and cause the other, 25, to bear radially on a cam groove 25 in an interchangeable plate 28 driven by worm-gearing from the control shaft. The groove may be replaced by a cam surface on the upper face of a driven plate.
