Abstract
1,048,491. Closing filled packages; preserving contents of packages. AUTOPRUFE Ltd. Dec. 13, 1962 [Sept. 13, 1961], No.32780/61. Heading B8C. [Also in Division B5] Apparatus for thermo welding plastics materials comprises two jaws 16, 19 the jaw 16 being movable towards and away from the jaw 19, a jaw moving member 15 operable to close the jaws by means of an electromagnetic device, and means for controlling the supply of welding current to the jaws in accordance with the position of the latter so that such current is supplied only when the jaws 16, 19 are closed. The member 15 extends through a slot 14 in an outer-casing 10 to which a plate 16 having an edge 18 forming the gripping edge of the movable jaw is attached. The jaw 19 comprises a plate secured to the base 11 of the casing 10. The apparatus includes an inner casing 21 secured to the casing 10 and having a slot 24 registering with the slot 14. The member 15 is of channel shape cross-section over a major part of its length and a spindle 26 extends through an aperture in each of its side flanges 25. The spindle 26 is mounted in the casing 21 by ball bearing assemblies 27 (Fig. 3, not shown). A leaf spring 30 bears on the inside of the channel formed by the member 15 and against a boss 31 on the casing 21 and tends to open the jaws 16, 19. The member 15 is attached to the armature 34 of a solenoid 35 by two leaf springs 36 fitted in diametrical slots in the ends of a pin 41 mounted on the armature 34. Movement of the armature 34 upwardly causes movement of the member 15 about the pivot 26 to close the jaws 16, 19. This movement also causes a pin 43 on the member 15 to move the operating member 42 of a microswitch 38 to supply high frequency current to the jaws 16, 19. Alternatively, both the solenoid circuit and the circuit for the jaws may be controlled by the switch 38. In a modification, not shown, two micro-switches are pro vided and the circuits are connected to the member 15 and the fixed jaw 19, each jaw being heated to the welding temperature by the current supplied thereto. An automatic control circuit including a time delay mechanism may be incorporated in the apparatus whereby the circuits may be energized in timed relation. The apparatus may be arranged to operate intermittently in timed relation to apparatus for feeding containers between the jaws and removing them after welding. The apparatus is similar to that described in Specification 1,048,492.
