Abstract

Alcohol-free alkyl chlorides are prepared by counter-currently washing an alcohol-containing alkyl chloride with an aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid having a concentration not above 35% by weight, whereby the alcohol is dissolved in the hydrochloric acid solution and wherein the alcohol contains 1 to 6 carbon atoms. The alcohol-containing alkyl chloride may be the raw esterification product obtained by the esterification of a C1 to C6 alcohol with hydrochloric acid and any alkyl ether contained in said raw product will also be present in the alcohol-free product. The solution of alcohol in hydrochloric acid obtained in the process of the invention may be recycled to an alkyl chloride producing step and any hydrochloric acid in the alcohol-free product can be removed by distillation of said product in the presence of water, the acid so obtained being recycled, if desired, to the alkyl chloride preparation.
