Abstract

1,048,160. Edge-runner mills. RICHARDS STRUCTURAL STEEL CO. Ltd. Oct. 20, 1965 [Nov. 13, 1964], No. 46240/64. Heading B2A. Hydraulic cylinders effect pressure control of the wheels 15,16 of a mulling machine of the kind comprising of flat-bottomed open-topped cylindrical crib 10, a mulling assembly including a cross head 21 carrying mulling wheels and plough blades 17, 18, and means for turning the assembly about a vertical axis. A horizontal shaft 29 is rotatably mounted on the cross head 21 with a trailing link 31 coupled to the shaft and pivotable therewith, and an axle (not shown) for the mulling wheel 16 is carried by the trailing link, with a double-acting piston-cylinder unit 35 mounted on the cross head with the piston movable in a horizontal direction and coupled to the shaft via a link 33. For the wheel 15 a similar arrangement comprising a rock-shaft 38 carrying a link 40 for the axle 41 of the wheel 15 is operated by a piston/cylinder unit 44, which acts in opposite sense to the unit 35. A control device comprising a pressure gauge 55 an adjustable valve 56 and an adjustable restrictor 54 changes the degree and direction of application of pressure fluid to the cylinder, so that the latter rotates the shaft 29, 38 to a controlled extent in one or other direction, and thus applies the wheels 15,16 downwards at a selected pressure, or raises them. Compressed air is applied to the cylinders via a distributor 49 which rotates with the mulling assembly.
