Abstract

A gas or liquid filter element comprises an annular core 1 Fig 1 (not shown) of foamed plastic material e.g., polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride, polytetrafluoroethylene or synthetic rubber having pores extending therethrough and secured to fluid flow directing end caps 2, 3. Any impermeable skin formed during setting of the material is either skimmed off or is punctured to provide a plurality of perforations 24 Fig. 4 (not shown). The core is formed by extrusion of the chosen plastic material from a nozzle 10 (Fig. 2, not shown) having a cross-section corresponding to that of the element which may be star-sectioned; the extruded material then being cut to length. The inner and outer surfaces of a tubular element may be supported by perforated metal or plastic sleeves 6, 5 which may be secured to the end caps 2, 3 of metal or plastic material. The element may be coated with oil when used for filtering gases.
