1,078,958. Cartridge filter. TECHNICAL FABRICATORS Inc. Nov. 3, 1965, No. 46645/65. Heading BID. A cartridge filter for liquids comprises a tubular filter element 11, made of a needled felt of polypropylene, vinyl chloride/vinyl cyanide copolymer, cellulose acetate, wool or cellulose or mixtures thereof which is free of chemical binders, the ends of the element being turned over and tucked inside a separate reticulate support 10 and retained therein by end caps 12. Support 10 consists of two sets of polypropylene rods (13, 14) arranged helically in two different directions and bonded together where they cross. Support 10 is shown internally supported by a spring 25. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 7, 8, not shown) spring 25 is replaced by a perforate sleeve with radial ribs, made of plastics by extrusion. End caps 12 have holes 21, respectively fitting on centering pin 28 and outlet pipe 32 when the cartridge is in use in housing 26. Element 11 is replaceable by removing caps 12 and sliding element 11 off support 10. Elements 11 are made by wrapping a strip of felt to tubular form, bonding the overlapping edge portions (18) by adhesive or heat sealing and cutting the resulting tube into lengths. Polypropylene fibres in the felt element 11 may range from 0.050 to 0.085 inches long, the retention may be 5 to 100 microns.
