Abstract
1,045,898. Piston, joint-making and stuffing- box packing. AEROQUIP A.G. Oct. 12, 1964, No. 41621/64. Headings F2B and F2T. A sealing ring for use between relatively fixed or relatively movable parts comprises an annular flexible sealing jacket 1 of channel shape in cross-section reinforced by a helically coiled spring 2 mounted within the jacket and formed of flat ribbon-like strip of spring material whereby the coils present closely spaced wide surfaces in contact with the interior surface of the jacket. The outer surfaces of the side walls 1a of the jacket are formed with projections lc defining sealing edges 1d and the spring 2 is formed by two springs 2a and 2b coiled in opposite hand and mounted one within the other. The channel 3 may open axially, as shown in Fig. 2, or radially inward or radially outward as required so that in use it is exposed to the pressure of the fluid to be sealed. The jacket 1 may be of plastics material, e.g. polytetrafluoroethylene, and the springs 2c, 2b may be of beryllium copper or stainless steel. The sealing ring may be used as a piston packing, Fig. 4 (not shown), or as a pipe joint packing, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown). In the application shown in Fig. 9 where the ring is used to form a seal between two members 15 and 16 and is exposed to extremely low temperatures, shrinkage of the ring causing the bottom wall 1b of the jacket to move away from the shoulder 15c of the member 15 is prevented by a rigid ring 14.
