Abstract

The invention comprises dyestuffs of the formula <FORM:1045579/C4-C5/1> wherein R1 and R2 are lower alkyl or aralkyl, R3 is a cyano-lower alkyl, R4 is a lower alkyl which may be substituted, R5 is H, lower alkyl which may be substituted, cyano or lower carbalkoxy ("lower alkyl" being a 1-4 C alkyl), rings A and B may carry substituents and X is anion provided that the molecule is devoid of -SO3H and -COOH groups, are prepared by condensing a benziminazole of the formula <FORM:1045579/C4-C5/2> with an aldehyde of the formula <FORM:1045579/C4-C5/3> by, for example, heating at 50-100 DEG C. in methanol or ethanol in the presence of piperidine. A wider class of dyes of the above formula wherein R3 is a lower alkyl which may be substituted, the other meanings being identical, are employed to colour polyacrylonitrile fibres. Examples are given of dyestuff preparation.ALSO:Polyacrylonitrile textile materials are coloured by applying a dye of the formula:- <FORM:1045579/D1-D2/1> wherein R1 and R2 are lower alkyl or aralkyl, R3 and R4 are lower alkyl which may be substituted, R5 is H, lower alkyl which may be substituted, cyano or lower carbalkoxy, the lines A and B may carry substituents and x is an anion provided that the dye is deroid of -SO3H and -COOH groups; "lower alkyl" being a 1-4 C alkyl. Dyeing may be effected from a bath of pH 3-8 at about 100 DEG C. or higher under pressure. Examples are given.
