The film spools of a cine projector are driven by a reversible motor 1 through a multi-stage gear system whereby for reverse projection or fast rewinding, the supply spool 22 may be driven in reverse at either of two speeds. Forward projection is provided through belt 3 driving pulley 4 carrying a spur gear 5 which rotates take-up spool 31 through belt 28, pulleys 27, 29, and the intermediate spur gears 9, 10, 12. Gear 12 engages and drives a further spur gear 16 which is connected to the coaxially mounted pulleys 17 on shaft 15 through a slipping, or unidirectional, coupling so that spool 22 rotates freely as film is drawn off. For reverse projection, motor 1 is reversed, and spool 22 is then driven in the "Z" direction as the above coupling now operates. For fast re-wind, shaft 15 is swung to the left on one arm of lever 14 until friction wheel 18 engages and is driven by wheel 6 at a higher speed than in the disengage position of Fig. 1. The slipping coupling therefore cannot operate and re-winding takes place at the higher speed. Arm 14 may be mechanically connected to the reversing switch for motor 1.
