Abstract

1,045,350. Casting-machines; cores; extracting castings; stamping. KETCH PLASTICS Ltd. Nov. 4, 1964 [Nov. 12, 1963], No. 44573/63. Headings B3F and B3Q. A collapsible tool for use in the moulding, casting or pressing of hollow articles, comprises a tapered spigot member 14 having first and second sets of inclined faces 14a, 14b (Fig. 3, not shown), of different inclination arranged alternately therearound, a plurality of segments 12, 13 slidably retained on the inclined faces and movable from a working position (Fig. 2) to a withdrawn position (Fig. 4, not shown), in which all the segments are displaced towards the axis of the spigot member. As the mould is opened, movement of an ejector plate 20 carrying ejector pins 21 is arrested by a stop 24a (Fig. 1, not shown), while a movable platen 19 continues to move. A nose portion 17 of the core, and the segments 12, 13 are thus prevented from making further axial movement, while the spigot 14 continues to move. In Figs. 1 to 5 (not all shown), a transparent street lamp cover 10 is injectionmoulded with a plurality of internal ribs, the collapsible core facilitating removal after moulding. In Figs. 6 to 8 (not shown), a sleeve 25 having a central internal flange and inturned flanges at each end is moulded by injection; similar spigots 26, 40 and segments 29, 30, and 41, 42 are mounted on the fixed and movable platens 22, 19 respectively.
