Abstract

The invention comprises 1b -methyl-D 2-5a ansten-17b -ol of the general formula <FORM:1045036/C2/1> where R1 represents hydrogen or acyl and R2 an alkyl group containing 1-4 carbon atoms, or an ethynyl or vinyl group, and a process for the preparation thereof, wherein in 1b -methyl-D 25a -androsten -17-one either an alkyl group containing 1-4 carbon atoms or an ethynyl group is introduced by a Grignard reaction into 17a -position, and, if desired, a 17a -ethynyl group is subsequently reduced to a vinyl group. The compounds are enabolic agents, possess an ovulation inhibiting effect and may be formulated in admixture or in conjunction with a suitable carrier for administration, e.g. per-orally.
