[Also in Division B7[ A rail vehicle, on to or from which may be side-loaded or unloaded a road vehicle trailer, has an upper loading surface 10, Figs. 1 and 2, a well 9 towards one end of the rail vehicle, two pairs of parallel tracks 21, 21 and 23, 23, extending along the vehicle from substantially the centre thereof and having parallel-inclined sections 35, 35 and 36, 36 connecting the outer ends of the tracks with the bottom of the well. and a bearing plate 13 on which is rotatably mounted a turn-table 3, to receive the trailer rear wheels, the plate 13 being provided at its corners with roller means 16, 16, 17, 17 to engage the tracks 21 and 23 respectively, the plate also being movable into and out of the well 9 by at least one fluid-operated ram. As shown in Fig. 3, the rocker means 16, 17 comprise pairs of rollers in casings 22, 22a, mounted on the plate by transverse horizontal pivots. An hydraulic cylinder 29 is pivoted at 30 at each side of the vehicle frame and the associated piston-rod is pivoted to a lever 24 pivoted by a transverse shaft 26 to the vehicle frame and provided with a roller 25 engaging behind a recess 27 in the plate 13. As the rods 28 are drawn into their cylinders 29 the plate is moved by the pivoted roller means 16, 17 up the inclined sections 35, 36. Independent means are provided for moving the plate 13 and turntable 3 along the top of the vehicle, to facilitate the loading or unloading of the trailer. In another embodiment described with reference to Figs. 6 to 8 (not shown), the inclined sections of the tracks are separate therefrom and each pivoted to the vehicle frame so as to be horizontally alignable with the tracks, when the plate 13 is raised out of the well. The pair of hydraulic cylinders 29 and piston-rods 28 and the means for moving the plate along the top of the vehicle are replaced by a single doubleacting piston and cylinder disposed on the longitudinal centre line of the vehicle, the cylinder being pivoted to the vehicle frame and the piston-rod pivoted to the underneath of the plate 13. The pivoted track sections are lockable in the horizontal positions by spring- loaded pivoted pawls releasable, when necessary, by manual means.
