Abstract
1,043,247. Tunnel diode oscillating circuits; switching circuits. HOOVER Ltd. Aug. 7, 1963 [Aug. 9, 1962], No. 30613/62. Heading H3T. [Also in Division H2] A tunnel diode oscillator comprises a supply transformer 11, connected across A.C. terminals 13, 14, having a secondary voltage of a fraction of a volt, an output transformer 20 and a tunnel diode 10 connected in a series loop with the secondary winding 15 of the supply transformer and the primary winding 21 of the output transformer. Bursts of output pulses from the oscillator during the periods when the instantaneous potential across the tunnel diode is above the necessary minimum value and of the correct polarity are fed over transformer 20 to differentiating circuit 23, 24 and thence to the control electrode of S.C.R. 25, connected in series with load 28 and inductor 26 across supply terminals 13, 14. The pulse rate frequency of the oscillator may be varied by withdrawing a ferrite rod forming the core of the output transformer 20. If a burst of pulses is required during each half cycle two similar tunnel diodes may be connected in series opposition in the series loop or a second secondary winding and a duplicate circuit connected in the reverse sense may be provided. A small resistance 16 may be inserted in the series loop if the resistance of the transformer windings is not high enough.
