Abstract
Rimming steel e.g. having small and widely dispersed non-metallic inclusions of Al2O3 is manufactured by melting a heat of steel and tapping the molten metal into a ladle, adding to the molten metal in the ladle a solid oxidizing agent such as 0.05 to 4.0 pounds of mill scale per ton of steel, adding thereto (either prior to, during or after the addition of oxidizing agent) aluminium as a deoxidizing agent in an amount e.g. up to 2 pounds per ton of steel, no more than sufficient to combine with all the oxygen in the oxidizing agent, and teeming the treated metal into moulds, preferably to form ingots which may be capped. Fe-Mn may also be added to the ladle.
