Abstract
Molten metal is tapped from a ladle 11 into a continuous in-line degassing vessel 14, from which it passes through an hydraulicallyoperated sliding valve 23 into a continuous casting mould 15. The vessel 14, containing a baffle 33, is evacuated through conduits 31, 32, while a deoxidizer, such as aluminium wire from a spool 28, is introduced through an opening 25. Aluminium or silicon may also be added as deoxidizers to the metal in mould 15. The partially solidified casting may be withdrawn from the mould at not less than 50 inches per minute.
