Abstract

1,040,021. Knitting machines. BENTLEY ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Oct. 5, 1962 [Oct. 11, 1961], No. 36496/61. Heading D1C. [Also in Division F2] Driving means in a circular knitting machine comprise an oscillatory gear 29, two complementary cams 32, 33 for oscillating said gear and cam followers co-operating respectively with said cams and coupled to the oscillatory gear at positions which are in balanced arrangement to the central plane of the oscillatory gear. When dogs 13 and 15, Fig. 2 (not shown), are engaged a pinion 11, 13 driven continuously from a three speed gearbox 18... 23, which box is driven by a belt 28 which engages over one of three pulleys 25... 27. When a clutch 7 is moved along a rod 9, to which it is splined, dogs 12, and 14 engage and the pinion 10 is driven by a quadrant 29 causing rod 9 and a needle cylinder drive bevel gear to oscillate. The quadrant 29 is of open construction and is secured to a shaft 30. Cams 32, 33 are fixed together and revolve with the shaft 31. Cam followers 34, 35 cause the movement of the quadrant 29 as they are acted upon by the cams 32, 33 respectively. The cam follower 35 is adjustable to counteract any play in this mechanism. The quadrant cams 32, 33 are adjustable angularly with respect to the gear 39 to facilitate changing from rotatory to oscillatory motions by ensuring precise engagement of the dogs 12,14.
