Abstract
The production of hydroxylamine by catalytic reduction of nitric oxide with hydrogen in acid solution is characterized in that the process is carried out continuously in the presence of a maintained concentration of the hydroxylamine salt of the acid of 0.4-1.0 mole per litre of reaction solution. Temperatures of 65-80 DEG C., a pH of 0.5-3.0 and aqueous or alcoholic solutions of H2SO4 or HCl are used. The preferred catalyst is platinum supported on active carbon and impregnated with silver nitrate; alloys of platinum with Ag, Hg, Pb, An, Ir, Pd, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo or W may be used. Hydroxylamine yields of more than 80% (referred to initial nitric oxide) are achieved.
