Abstract

Compositions for lubricating contacting surfaces comprise a solution or dispersion of polytetrafluoroethylene sintering at 307 DEG to 327 DEG C. in a liquid fluoro-organic compound having a solubility parameter of less than 7 and which can be evaporated at atmospheric pressure to leave no residue at a temperature below the sintering temperature of the polytetrafluoro-thylene. The liquid medium is preferably capable of being readily evaporated at room temperature. Specified fluoro compounds are monochlorodifluoroacetic acid, trichlorotri-fluoroacetone, perfluoroalkanes, perfluorocyclo-alkanes and fluorinated kerosene. Inert diluents, e.g. chlorinated hydrocarbons, ketones, nitro-alkanes, dimethylformamide and tetrahydrofuran, may also be present.ALSO:Metal and ceramic surfaces may be coated with compositions comprising polytetrafluoroethylene sintering in the range 307 to 327 DEG C. dispersed or dissolved in a liquid fluoro organic compound having a solubility parameter of less than 7 and which can be evaporated at atmospheric pressure to leave no residue at a temperature below the sintering point of the polytetrafluoroethylene. Metal surfaces may be pretreated to improve adhesion, e.g. by scratching with a wire brush or treating with an aqueous solution of a salt of a transition metal, e.g. copper, nickel, iron, cobalt, manganese or chromium. Specified fluoro compounds are monochlorodifluoroacetic acid, trichlorotrifluoroacetone, perfluoroalkanes, perfluorocycloalkanes and fluorinated kerosene; and diluents, e.g. chlorinated hydrocarbons, ketones, nitroalkanes, dimethylformamide and tetrahydrofuran, may also be present. In examples (1) an aluminium sheet is treated with copper nitrate solution and coated with a composition comprising polytetrafluoroethylene, trichlorotrifluoroacetone and trichloroethylene; and (2) a ceramic surface is coated with a composition comprising tetrafluoroethylene, monochlorodifluoroacetic acid and methyl ethyl ketone.
