Abstract
1,039,041. Lift cage catch gear. J. Mc- DOUGALL. June 22, 1964 [July 2, 1963], No. 26172/63. Heading B8L. Catch gear for a lift cage comprises a housing 8 secured to the cage and having a tapered interior surface conforming to the exterior surface of brake shoes 6, 7 which are adapted to surround a stationary rope 5 and which are urged upwardly by springs 10 acting on a plate 11 secured to the shoes. The plate 11 is connected by rods 12 to a plate 13 provided with an abutment 15. When the hoisting rope 2 is tensioned by the weight of the cage, a lever 14, which is pivoted on top of the cage and is connected by a chain 16 to a hanger 3 on the hoisting rope, engages the abutment 15 to force the plate 13 downwardly, thereby compressing the springs 10 and withdrawing the shoes 6, 7 partially from the housing 8. Wedges 17, 18, Fig. 3 (not shown), are secured to the housing 8 to spread the brake shoes as they move downwardly. When the hoisting rope 2 breaks, the springs 10 force the shoes into the housing thereby causing the shoes to grip the rope 5. An hydraulic shock-absorber, Fig. 2 (not shown), is interposed between the upper end of the rope 5 and its top anchorage and may be adapted to actuate a switch for initiating the switching-off and braking of the drive motor.
