Abstract

1,038,878. Seat adjustments. H. R. TURNER (WILLENHALL) Ltd. March 11, 1964 [July 12, 1963], No. 27622/63. Heading A4J. [Also in Division E2] An inclination adjustment mechanism for a vehicle seat having a back rest hinged at 24 for angular adjustment relative to a seat proper, comprises a rack 23 having teeth directed towards the hinge axis 24 and concentric with it, and a toothed locking plate 25, 26, guided for movement into and out of mesh with the rack 23. The plate 25, 26 is mounted on a quadrant 16 connected to a part 10 of the seat proper and the rack 23 is mounted on a quadrant 15 connected to a part 13 of the back rest. The quadrant 16 has a slot 29 to receive lugs 27 on the locking plate 25, 26. An eccentric part of a cam 30 bears on the lugs 27. The cam is operable by a handle 37 to displace the plate 25, 26 in a plane normal to the hinge axis 24 to bring it in and out of locking engagement with the rack 23. A hair pin spring 31 tends to return the mechanism to a meshed condition. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), a locking plate 50 is pivoted at 51 to the quadrant 16. The plate is pulled out of mesh by the nose of a lever 53 engaging a projection 54 on the plate 50 and is returned to mesh by a cam heel 55 on the lever 53 engaging on edge 56 on the plate. In a further modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), a lever 60 has a heel 61 engaging with an edge 62 of locking plate 26 to drive the latter into mesh. The plate is pulled out of mesh by a link 63 hooked on to the plate 26 and lever 60.
