Abstract

[Also in Division G3] A sealed temperature-controlled enclosure is surrounded by a double-walled casing 2. nozzles between the walls supplying heatexchange fluid tangential to the outer wall 4 the supply being dependent on the enclosure temperature, and the fluid escaping from pipe 13. In the embodiment liquid nitrogen from reservoir cylinder 22 is sprayed from apertures 9 in cylindrical heads 8 which have distributing plates 10. Heat probe 14 is provided against a wall of the casing in one arm of a Wheatstone bridge which is adjusted to balance when the probe 14 is at the required temperature in which case valve 23, situated in a vent to atmosphere, is open and liquid is not being supplied to the nozzles. An increase in temperature results in a voltage across galvanometer 19 which is amplified by amplifier 20 to operate relay 21 to close valve 23 the resulting increase of pressure in the reservoir 22 supplying liquid to the nozzles. The relatively thick outer wall is spaced from the relatively thin inner wall by wedge -shaped distance pieces 6. Radiation of heat across the space 26 improves the substantially uniform distribution of the temperature of the enclosure.
